Orthognathic double jaw surgery and natural V line experience, ID Hospital, Korea

Before surgery

My name is Marie, and I'm from USA. When I started doing my research about two jaw surgery I came across youtube videos of "Let me in" and the results and hope they gave those people are amazing! This was about 10 years ago and ever since then I told myself one day I will have my surgery at ID.

Consultation
The hospital is huge but they have a well-organized system. Everyone was professional and welcoming. I had a translator with me the whole time and the same translator were helping me throughout my journey which was nice.
I met my doctor, Dr. Lee Seok Jae a board-certified maxillofacial surgeon, I was really nervous because I was expecting the doctors there to be too serious. However, I kept a smile on my face and asked my questions politely. Dr. Lee was very nice, very professional and he is the type of doctor that knows exactly what he is talking about, he makes sense. What I also liked about him is that he was very honest and straight to the point. At first, I was wanting more surgery but he recommended not to do all of those surgeries at once for my safety. He gained my trust during my consultation because all of my concerns and questions were answered and he explained what type of procedure and how he is going to approach my case. I told him how I wanted my jaw to look like for Vline and told him I want it to look natural and not too pointy.

Presurgery
I had all the testings done (Xray and CT Scan, Cardiography, and Blood work). My before pictures were taken. Then I went to ID's Dental Floor to take impressions of my teeth for the wafer (kind of like retainer that they will use during the surgery to correct my bite, I would wear it as well until I get my braces).

After surgery

Surgery started at 10 am and I was awake at 1:30-2:00, I was transferred to the ward and stayed in the hospital for two nights. The nurses were so prompt and efficient in changing my ice pack and whenever I hit the call light button they were there right away. The doctor came to visit me just to check how I was doing. Nurses continued to monitor me until I can walk on my own. I was good at changing my ice pack and walking around the ward.

On the discharge day the doctor came in to check me before discharge and then the nurse explained where to get my prescriptions. They also gave me a care packet with skincare and mask that will help for deswelling. my compression band and extra ice pack to take home. I was using icepack for 4 days and then warm pack after will help a lot with the swelling. I made sure that I change my ice packs consistently to prevent swelling then my 5th day I was doing warm packs to help minimize the swelling. 5th day and 6th day was peak swelling for me.

Honestly, I did not feel any pain since surgery day except for the day they removed the stitches and the first time I had to replace my own elastic band stings.

Overall, my experience at ID Hospital and everyone that helped me were outstanding. I think they went over and beyond what I expected. It was a truly memorable experience for me and I will forever remember my life-changing experience with them. Here I am now after the surgery and I couldn't be more happier and satisfied with my face and smile. It is the best decision I have made for myself.

Tomoko's life changing experience of double jaw orthognathic surgery, V line surgery, cheekbone reduction, acculift and fat graft in ID Hospital

Before

The idea of getting plastic surgery wasn’t sudden to me. I have always wanted to change my face contour because of the wide facial bone. ID Hospital is the most well-known facial bone hospital in the whole Asia, that’s why I chose Korea over Japan for my plastic surgery journey.

I had No Tie Double Jaw surgery, V line surgery, Cheekbone reduction, Acculift and Fat graft all by dr. Lee Seokjae.

After

2 weeks

I had a feeling of a sore throat until 2 weeks post op. It’s interesting that at the night time the face is getting slimmer and looks normal, and in the morning it’s chubby and big again. A good thing is the temporary sense loss is getting back to normal again, and the left side of my face has a lot of sense back!

1 month

One month after the surgery my face looked a little asymmetrical because the swelling went down differently, and I was worried about it. However the sensation became normal, and I was also able to open my mouth widely for the first time since the surgery and eat more various food after mouth opening exercises.
I am looking forward to see the result after the swelling subsides.

3 months

I'm glad that the swelling has come down! I can come back to my daily routine normally! Recently the more people around me say I look prettier and cuter, the more confident I feel! Until now I didn't like to see my pictures, but now I really enjoy taking them!

5 months

As the swelling has gone the shape of my face in the last month is very different! It’s fun to see the daily changes.

9 months

I'm happy because now I have a perfect face shape. It's really amazing how the surgery can change not only the facial bone shape, but also the quality of life. I only regret that I haven’t done it earlier.

3 months after double jaw, V line and double eyelid surgery in ID Hospital

Before surgery

I had a lot of insecurities about my face, and especially jaw. It's really hard to overcome it when you can't even laugh without worrying about how your face looks like.  I decided to get a plastic surgery and fix my jaw misalignment to gain more confidence.

My surgeons were Hyon Won Seok and Choi Jae Ho. They recommended me to combine double jaw surgery and V line surgery for my jaw, and also get a double eyelid surgery for a better dramatic change.

After surgery

3 days after surgery

I experience the extreme swelling during first 3 days. I took medicine and went back to the hotel, and to be honest I worried a lot about my swollen face. The consultant said that it's ok, and recommended me some walking and drinking water to help deswelling.

1 week after surgery

Even though I was a little anxious about the way I looked, I got used to the swollen face. The recovery was uncomfortable, but I had a major surgery, so I just had to overcome it.

Around this time, the result of  double eyelid surgery became very beautiful.

1 month after surgery

I felt some inconvenience in the mornings when I woke up, but other than that, the pain seemed to be bearable. The swelling has gradually reduced.

2 months after surgery

At this time I could apply make up and I could see first permanent result from the surgery. My face looked much slimmer, and despite some swelling I started enjoying going out.

Before the surgery I used to apply heavy make up to hide my face. At 2 months point I've noticed that natural make up was enough for me to feel confident. I loved that feeling.

3 months after surgery

I'm looking forward to seeing my face gradually getting slimmer. The face shape changes from day to day, and it is very exciting.  I feel much happier compared to my life before the surgery. I can't say that recovery is easy, but in my case it changed my life positively 100%. Thank you, ID Hospital!

Japanese patient had orthognathic surgery, V line surgery, cheekbone reduction and ptosis correction in ID Hospital, Korea

Before surgery

I came from Japan to Korea to fix my facial asymmetry. ID Hospital is very well-known in Japan as one of the best clinic for facial bone surgeries. I wanted to fix my jaw asymmetry and protrusion, and get a V line surgery  for a more dramatic effect. In the end I've decided to undergo cheekbone reduction as well. As for my eyes, I was recommended to get a ptosis correction to make them look bigger and get rid of "sleepy" eyes.

After surgery

1 week after surgery

The swelling after facial hone surgeries is normal, and I wasn't surprised when my face looked roumd after 1 week. The prosis correction effect, however, was seen right away. The incision line was swollen, but my eyes definitely looked better than before.

I was also really happy that my face felt smaller. I used hot and ice packs provided by ID Hospital so the swelling could go down faster. I also applied bruising cream.

3 weeks after surgery

The diet after orthognathic and V line surgeries is really strict, so I was mostly eating soft food.  It's hard to follow it, so I was really looking into eating something more delicious once I heal.

1 month after surgery

During 1 month the swelling was gradually going down. I was really happy because the people around me told me that my face looked smaller. I touched my face all the time because I couldn't believe it. The jaw line was very smooth and it was first time in my life when I started enjoying taking pictures!

3 months after surgery

At this point I could eat almost the same food as before the surgery, except for thick meat. The major swelling has mostly disappeared, and I loved my elegant V line shape.

5 months after surgery

After around half a year I could bite hard food, so I had no inconvenience with the food. The result both on the jaw and eyes looked so natural, that I almost forgot that I had a surgery haha.

I truly emjoyed every moment. My eyes looked much bigger and more defined, and my face looked slim and pretty.

1 year after surgery

It's been 1 year after the surgery. I can't express how much grateful I am to ID Hospital and to my doctor Lee Tae Seong. ID Hospital medical staff and coordinators took care of me from the beginning till full recovery. I'm sure that my swelling went down so fast thanks to ID Hospital post op care treatments and care.

The thing I like the most is that it looks natural, just like I wanted! Amazing work! I'm really happy!

How to choose the right surgeon for your double jaw surgery in Korea

If you have an external or functional problem due to asymmetry of the jaw, you can consider orthognathic surgery, also known as double jaw surgery. Double jaw surgery is an operation of the upper and lower jaw. It is an operation that artificially separates and rearranges the facial bone where the nerve is located.

double jaw surgery

Since double jaw surgery was first introduced in Korea, several surgical procedures have advanced. Once the bones have been through osteotomy, it cannot be reverted to the original form and re operation is a financial burden, so it is important to choose the right surgery according to the characteristics of each individual.

‘Skip the braces if teeth are aligned’
If occlusion is not a problem, but jaw surgery is necessary, orthodontic is not required. The generic double jaw surgery involves orthodontic treatment before or after surgery to ensure that the jawbone is in the correct position. However in recent years, orthodontic treatment can be omitted depending on symptoms, thereby minimizing inconvenience and financial burden. More precise decisions are made after a careful consultation and diagnosis with a specialist.

‘Skip jaw wiring if you have a nasal problem or difficulty in nasal breathing’
If you are having difficulty breathing due to a nasal disease, you can omit jaw wiring. Jaw wiring is a jaw fixation method of tying the upper and lower teeth with wires or bands to secure the jawbone so it doesn’t move after surgery. However, this can cause airway obstruction, so for cases like this, it is possible to omit the fixation.

Alarm activated when surgical tool is approaching the nerve’
double jaw surgery navigation machineNeuronal damage has always been a risk of double jaw surgery. Neurons are nerve cells that transmit nerve signals to and from the brain. However, it is difficult to check them with the eyes during the operation, so it is very tough to rely only on the equipment and the hand technique of the doctor.
Navigation double jaw machine can detect each patient’s position of nerve, and an alarm is activated when surgical tool is approaching near the nerve to prevent damage. In addition, a live surgical scene can be monitored and progressed, reducing even the smallest error of the planned osteotomy.

Double jaw surgery is a procedure that can be performed only by specialists with accumulated clinical experience and skills. If you are considering double jaw surgery for asymmetry or lantern jaw correction, you should research in advance on the surgery method the hospital pursues, type of surgery they offer, experience and ability of medical staff, and establishment of safety system.

After Double Jaw Surgery Self Care Tips

After Double Jaw Surgery Self Care Tips

Deciding to get double jaw surgery is a big decision in your life. The first day after the surgery is especially quite tough, but by learning some tips on aftercare, it can definitely make your recovery easier. Here are some tips you should know for after double jaw surgery.
after double jaw surgery

First day After Double Jaw Surgery

During the first day after the surgery, you will be hospitalized for one night and the nurses will be taking care of you and monitoring you throughout as directed by the surgeon. Make sure to take the medications prescribed to you along with hydrating yourself throughout.

First week

To reduce swelling elevate your head in the level above your heart at all times. For the first three days make sure you religiously ice pack the area of swelling. After the three days, you will then switch to a warm pack. Walking is also encouraged for deswelling, however, do not be over active on your first week after surgery.
On your first week, make sure you are on a strict liquid diet. This can include consuming smoothies, protein shakes or juices. Even though you can’t consume soft/solid food, make sure to always keep yourself hydrated. Avoid carbonated drinks as it can lead to nausea and sugar concentrated drinks that lead to dehydration.
Make sure to keep your wound area clean, this will include using mouth wash 2-3 times a day and brushing your tooth with a soft baby sized toothbrush 2-3 times a day.

Second Week

By the end of your second week your swelling will have gone down significantly. However, numbness in your lower lip and chin might still be present. On your follow up treatment, you will be instructed to practice changing your rubber bands daily. Your new set of rubber bands should give you more range of motion to open your mouth. Diet wise, continue to take liquid diet, but by the second week you may start adding soft food to your diet such as scrambled eggs, soft pasta, oatmeal etc.

Third & Fourth week

By the end of the one month period, you should be able to open your mouth as wide as you could before. Continue your soft food diet throughout the third and fourth week as well, but you can start exercising lightly such as going bike riding, treadmill or light aerobics. By your sixth week you will remove your splints and you can resume back to your daily diet but don't forget to take it slowly.
