How to choose the right surgeon for your double jaw surgery in Korea

If you have an external or functional problem due to asymmetry of the jaw, you can consider orthognathic surgery, also known as double jaw surgery. Double jaw surgery is an operation of the upper and lower jaw. It is an operation that artificially separates and rearranges the facial bone where the nerve is located.

double jaw surgery

Since double jaw surgery was first introduced in Korea, several surgical procedures have advanced. Once the bones have been through osteotomy, it cannot be reverted to the original form and re operation is a financial burden, so it is important to choose the right surgery according to the characteristics of each individual.

‘Skip the braces if teeth are aligned’
If occlusion is not a problem, but jaw surgery is necessary, orthodontic is not required. The generic double jaw surgery involves orthodontic treatment before or after surgery to ensure that the jawbone is in the correct position. However in recent years, orthodontic treatment can be omitted depending on symptoms, thereby minimizing inconvenience and financial burden. More precise decisions are made after a careful consultation and diagnosis with a specialist.

‘Skip jaw wiring if you have a nasal problem or difficulty in nasal breathing’
If you are having difficulty breathing due to a nasal disease, you can omit jaw wiring. Jaw wiring is a jaw fixation method of tying the upper and lower teeth with wires or bands to secure the jawbone so it doesn’t move after surgery. However, this can cause airway obstruction, so for cases like this, it is possible to omit the fixation.

Alarm activated when surgical tool is approaching the nerve’
double jaw surgery navigation machineNeuronal damage has always been a risk of double jaw surgery. Neurons are nerve cells that transmit nerve signals to and from the brain. However, it is difficult to check them with the eyes during the operation, so it is very tough to rely only on the equipment and the hand technique of the doctor.
Navigation double jaw machine can detect each patient’s position of nerve, and an alarm is activated when surgical tool is approaching near the nerve to prevent damage. In addition, a live surgical scene can be monitored and progressed, reducing even the smallest error of the planned osteotomy.

Double jaw surgery is a procedure that can be performed only by specialists with accumulated clinical experience and skills. If you are considering double jaw surgery for asymmetry or lantern jaw correction, you should research in advance on the surgery method the hospital pursues, type of surgery they offer, experience and ability of medical staff, and establishment of safety system.

ID Hospital Double Jaw surgery and Ptosis Correction Surgery Review

Why I decided to get Double Jaw Surgery

Since high school, plastic surgery has always been in a mind. The reason was because of my lantern jaw and extreme asymmetrical face. A lantern jaw is when your lower jaw sticks out further than your upper jaw, giving your face a long, lean and gaunt appearance. Mine was pretty severe. And for this reason, my appearance has always been the biggest insecurity of my life. After years of research about double jaw surgery, on the day I turned 19, I didn't hesitate a second to get surgery done!

This is a picture of me before surgery. You can obviously tell that I had a very asymmetrical face. When people would first see me, they would get a poor first impression of me and told me that I was hard to approach. I didn't like my small eyes either. I would especially notice how small they are when I take photos, because they always looked half closed- making me look sleepy
My double jaw condition was quite serious that the hospital told me if it was just 0.3mm more distorted, my surgery would have been covered by insurance. I visited many hospitals for consultations including huge university hospitals. But at the end I decided to go with ID hospital.

After discussing with my parents I decided to get the “surgery-first approach” orthognothic surgery. And since I was getting surgery anyway, I decided to go ahead and get ptosis correction surgery as well to fix my sleepy eyes.

My eyes always looked half closed making me looking sleepy all the time

before going into surgery

The whole surgery took about 6 hours. But for me, it didn’t feel like 6 hours. Right before surgery I was telling my Doctors to take good care of me. Then all I remember is falling asleep and waking up in the recovery room. It’s amazing what anesthesia can do haha

After Surgery

When I woke up from surgery, I still had anesthesia in my system so I wasn't able to have complete free range of motion. It was impossible to breathe through my nose. At that moment, I was in great discomfort. But now that I look back at it, I think it was bearable. The hardest part for me was that the respiratory I was breathing through was causing dryness in my mouth and throat. This made me really thirsty. But when the nurses saw me struggle, they brought me a humidifier which made me feel a little better after.

right after surgery

This is a photo of me right after I got discharged! You can tell that I was very swollen. I was really hungry as well because I have been fasting for hours. The hospital provided me with a liquid shake and consuming it helped my hunger go down. The nurses were very helpful throughout my recovery right after surgery. Also one more thing, I usually sleep on my side, but after surgery I wasn’t able to. That was quite difficult for me because it hurt my back during the night.

Photo of me two months post operation. Swelling has gone down a lot in this photo

6 months post operation

7 months post operation

Overall

I’m sharing my experience with everyone because prior to my surgery, the reviews I read were very helpful and gave me more insight of the surgical process and assurance in my decision to get surgery. Since this is a huge operation, you really need to be careful on who you choose as your surgeon. I hope my experience can help others find the courage to go through what I did and experience a new life through it. Good luck.

After Double Jaw Surgery Self Care Tips

After Double Jaw Surgery Self Care Tips

Deciding to get double jaw surgery is a big decision in your life. The first day after the surgery is especially quite tough, but by learning some tips on aftercare, it can definitely make your recovery easier. Here are some tips you should know for after double jaw surgery.
after double jaw surgery

First day After Double Jaw Surgery

During the first day after the surgery, you will be hospitalized for one night and the nurses will be taking care of you and monitoring you throughout as directed by the surgeon. Make sure to take the medications prescribed to you along with hydrating yourself throughout.

First week

To reduce swelling elevate your head in the level above your heart at all times. For the first three days make sure you religiously ice pack the area of swelling. After the three days, you will then switch to a warm pack. Walking is also encouraged for deswelling, however, do not be over active on your first week after surgery.
On your first week, make sure you are on a strict liquid diet. This can include consuming smoothies, protein shakes or juices. Even though you can’t consume soft/solid food, make sure to always keep yourself hydrated. Avoid carbonated drinks as it can lead to nausea and sugar concentrated drinks that lead to dehydration.
Make sure to keep your wound area clean, this will include using mouth wash 2-3 times a day and brushing your tooth with a soft baby sized toothbrush 2-3 times a day.

Second Week

By the end of your second week your swelling will have gone down significantly. However, numbness in your lower lip and chin might still be present. On your follow up treatment, you will be instructed to practice changing your rubber bands daily. Your new set of rubber bands should give you more range of motion to open your mouth. Diet wise, continue to take liquid diet, but by the second week you may start adding soft food to your diet such as scrambled eggs, soft pasta, oatmeal etc.

Third & Fourth week

By the end of the one month period, you should be able to open your mouth as wide as you could before. Continue your soft food diet throughout the third and fourth week as well, but you can start exercising lightly such as going bike riding, treadmill or light aerobics. By your sixth week you will remove your splints and you can resume back to your daily diet but don't forget to take it slowly.

Steps to follow for a faster recovery post-surgery!

Patients’ main concern about having surgery is the recovery time. Individual have to go back to work or school, and want to look as normal as possible when resuming their normal routine.

Bruising and swelling post-surgery is inevitable, and the level of swelling differs from person to person. There is no way to know in advance, how your body will react to surgery (unless you have previous surgery experience) but it is not a reason to shy away from having surgery! We have a few pointers you can follow below to ensure, you have the fastest recover possible!

1.  Follow Post-surgery instructions: Patients receive post-surgery care instructions before getting discharged, so make sure to take a look at it and ask any questions before leaving. You can also request for the post-operation manual from the online consultant, if you want to know in advance what to anticipate.

2.   The sleeping position is very important, and the instructions should be followed for safety reasons and this will also help reduce the swelling.

3.   Follow the instructions for using the ice/hot packs, as these will help alleviate swelling faster.

4.   The sooner you can, it is advisable to take light walks to help reduce swelling. This is one of the fastest methods, but do not overdo it, light walking only.

5.   Sauna/steam room, exercise should be avoided for a month after surgery, in some cases longer. Smoking and alcohol should also be avoided, as they can impact the recovery time and can also lead to an infection.

6.   Certain foods help patients heal faster. Chewing may be difficult after some surgeries so liquid/soft foods are advised for few days after surgery. In Korea, pumpkin juice and soup/porridge are said to help reduce swelling but patients can also have liquids like protein shakes, fresh fruits and fruit juices, and transition to soft foods as time goes by.

7.   ID Hospital offers patients post-operative care treatments to heal the swelling reduce, which are very helpful for patients. In addition, patients may also choose to purchase from a range of ID AZ products designed by ID Hospital to help patients heal faster.

On the whole, surgery may be daunting for some, but with ID Hospital, one can rest assure that they will receive all the necessary care throughout the surgery journey.

Purpose of Online Consultation

ID Hospital offers online consultation through different channels like email, Whatsapp, line, kakaotalk, posting on the website etc., to assist the patient to get an idea about the type of surgeries they require with estimated price quotes.

Things patients have to keep in mind about online consultation:

1.     The online consultation offer surgery recommendations based on photos sent to the consultant, but the doctor’s recommendation may differ at the actual consultation appointment. If the recommendation differs, the price also differs, so patients should keep that in mind when doing the online consultation.

2.     The price quotes given are the starting point (basic) but if the patient requires a more complicated surgery process, the surgery price will increase, so that is something to keep in mind, especially if the patient has had an accident and is having a reconstructive surgery.

3.     Revision surgery: online consultation for revision surgeries is very limited, due to the patient already having surgery performed on that area, through pictures or X-ray, surgery possibility cannot be confirmed. A face to face consultation is required.

4.     The recovery time for various surgeries differ, so if you decide to have different surgeries from the ones initially recommended, make sure to let the online consultant know. For example, forehead implant surgery requires 1 week for the implant to be customized, so surgery is done one week after consultation, so the patient has to stay for 2 weeks in Korea, but if doing other surgeries like V-line surgery, then the total duration of stay will increase to 3 weeks.

5.     Potential patients have to make sure to disclose their medical history details and allergies before making a surgery booking. If a patient leaves out important information during the online consultation, and during the pre-examinations, the hospital finds out they have a medical condition that prevents them from having surgery, surgery will be cancelled and deposit will not be refunded. So please always mention all details related to medical history and allergies.

Do feel free to contact us on any of our contact details below for a free online consultation~~

Japanese man having plastic surgery at ID Hospital! - men plastic surgery, orthognathic surgery, two jaw, double jaw, japan, japanese

Name:       Kirishima
Country:   Japan
Concern:  Long chin, malocclusion
Surgery:   Orthognathic Surgery,
                  V-line Surgery

Hello everyone.
From elementary school, I experienced severe malocclusion which resulted in protruding chin. I visited university hospitals and dentists in Japan for consultations and I was advised to receive orthodontic practice (to have braces) for 5 years and then to have orthognathic surgery. I thought this to be very cumbersome and time consuming. But then I found ID Hospital and their unique surgery method called the surgery first approach so the patient receives the surgery first and then have orthodontics. ID Hospital is widely known for its expertise  also in Japan for its specialization in facial contouring and orthognathic surgery!

I had my consultation with Dr. Sang Hoon Park. He told me that the overall size of my face isn’t too big but it's the length of the chin that is making my face look very long. He kindly explained me about the symptoms I had with the CT and X-rays. Since the degree of my protruding chin and the malocclusion were quite severe, he told me that I could have effective results for both functionally and aesthetically by undergoing orthognathic surgery and V line surgery. And I decided to receive the surgery right away.

Right after the surgery it was very difficult to breathe for about 6 hours and my throat felt really sore. And I had major swellings then but I was very happy to see my face with the improvements of the malocclusion. It was surprising!!

1 week after surgery! I also had blocked nose after surgery but it was gone by the time and I could breathe through my nose more comfortably and easily than before. The swelling care that was provided by the hospital had been very helpful for me to de-swell.

2 Weeks had flown after surgery. The swellings reduced a lot and I was incredibly happy to see my jaw corrected, and also the face getting smaller and smaller. After my departure to Japan, I couldn't wait to see my parents and friends!

This is week 3 after surgery. It was my last visit to the hospital for treatments, interview and to have my after surgery photos taken. Every time I looked in the mirror, I felt so different and couldn't remember my old face at all.

malocclusion, men plastic surgery, plastic surgery korea, two jaw surgery, double jaw surgery
One month later, most of the swelling had lessened. When I returned to Japan, my parents were so delighted to see me with my symptoms improved. As for the meals, I took soup based food until then but was able to enjoy a more variety of softer food afterwards. I had a bit of trouble speaking comfortably so had to put extra efforts to exercise my muscles to pronounce and talk.

It had been around 2 months after surgery. Nearly all swelling had gone away and was finally able to speak well from then on.

Now it is 6 months after surgery and have no difficulty in living my daily life. I'm feeling great with the results that I take a selfie every day. And I went to ID again to have rhinoplasty to have smaller and more defined nose. Once again, I'm extremely satisfied with the surgery outcomes and I can't wait to see my nose without the swellings!

Jenna Talackova's Orthognathic Surgery Recovery in Korea

Jenna Talackova, Famous Canadian Model/Celebrity underwent Orthognathic Surgery
(Jaw Correction Surgery) at ID Hospital Korea.

It has been 2 years and let us see her interview and her orthognathic surgery recovery!

Jenna Talackova first rose to fame as the first transgendered woman to compete in the Miss Universe Canada pageant back in 2012, after initially being disqualified because she was not a "naturally born female." After the sudden disqualification, a lawsuit was filed against the pageant owner, Donald Trump, which ultimately lead to the elimination of the rule that kept transgender women out of the Miss Universe Pageant.

In 2014, Talackova further pursued her dreams of modelling and acting, leading to the premiere of the hit reality series on E! known as Brave New Girls

Why did she visit ID Hospital back in 2013?

At a young age, Jenna Talackova had fallen and struck her lower jaw, causing a collision and misalignment between both the maxilla and mandible (upper and lower jaw). With age, these problems increased, causing functional issues like chewing, slurring, and speaking problems. In addition, not only did the accident cause functional problems, but it also caused her jaw to grow more big and wide, inevitably leading to a more masculine facial contour.

Back in 2013, she had researched and visited many plastic surgery hospitals in both America and Korea, but ultimately chose Dr. Park of ID Hospital. She chose Dr. Park simply because she knew he was the best and because she felt comfortable with him at an instant. She even mentioned that other hospitals offered a full discount, but she declined. She came to ID Hospital and paid for her surgery with Dr. Park when she could have underwent free surgery at another hospital.

Why did she return to ID Hospital?

Simple. Because she adores Korean culture and loves Korea. Also, she came by to see Dr. Park again.
After all, she wanted the best doctor rather than a free surgery. She adores Dr. Park and wishes to tell her story to everyone who is considering this complex surgery.

Check out her video review before the surgery from 2013

Check out her video review from after the surgery back in 2013

(Below) Jenna Talackova at only 3 months post operation!

Jenna Talackova has underwent facial contouring and orthnognatic surgery here at ID Hospital

For those of you who don't already know, Jenna Talackova is a Canadian model and television personnel who gained worldwide attention back in 2012 when she successfully waged a legal battle after being disqualified for being a transgender woman.
Talackova had previously competed in the 2012 Miss International Queen pageant for transgender and transexual women in Thailand, and later went on to compete for the Miss Universe Canada 2012 competition, until she was recognize by an anonymous tipper, thus being disqualified from the pageant completely.
Talackova later contacted a lawyer who took the case and challenged pageant organizers including Donald Trump, who is the owner of the Miss Universe organization, to reverse the competition and to allow her to compete. She proudly made it to the Top 12, but failed to reach the top 5. She was, however, awarded the title of Miss Congeniality.

So what's her reason for traveling across the world to visit ID Hospital in Korea?

At a tender age, Talackova had fallen and collided her jaw, leading to disorders throughout her life including, but not limited to, drooling, slurring in speech, pronunciation disability, as well as the complex of living as a man with a more masculine facial contour.  Our director and lead doctor, Dr. Park Sang Hoon, who performed Talackova’s surgeries, exclaimed, “ Ms. Talackova may be beautiful inside and out, but the transgender nature, from early on, inevitably undergoes masculine facial bone development. For her, she experienced this as well as jaw dysfunction as well as functional problematic issues early on.”

Jenna Talackova undergoes thorough medical exams, tests, scans, and analysis prior to surgery

Talackova underwent surgery in the upper jaw (maxilla) as well as the lower (mandible) to cut the bone in the right position to move the jaw. The elongated lower jaw, protruded mouth, as well as facial asymmetry due to misalignment in teeth.
Starting from the early 60s, what began in Europe has been perfected and advanced by Korea and is years ahead of its time.
ID Hospital, the hospital where Jenna Talackova received her surgeries, is situated on the Beauty Belt of Apgujeong, Gangnam, Korea and has superior, advanced technology where it was first introduced. Interpreters are also available for the convenience of patients, as well as limousine services and high quality post-operative services.
