How to look younger with under eye surgeries

The under eye area is one of the key indicators of aging.

As you get older, the collagen production reduces, the skin thins or sags and eye bags start to show.

Contrary to popular belief, there is no one surgery that will suit everyone.

Depending on the actual symptoms, skin elasticity, fat, and collagen, the recommended surgery will differ.

To give you a better idea of each surgery’s function, let’s look at four different cases that deal with the under eye area.

All the below surgeries require a week’s stay in Korea (post-surgery).

Major swelling and bruising take 1-2 weeks and minor swelling takes 3-6 months.

Under eye fat graft

A fat graft is a procedure by which fat is extracted from the abdomen or thigh area, and used to add volume to areas of the face.

This surgery benefits anyone who has hollow under eye area. The fat is used to fill out the sunken areas and this, in turn, will make anyone look younger.

Under eye fat repositioning

For this type of case, the inner parts of the under eye area appears to be hollow yet there are visible under eye bags.

An under eye fat repositioning surgery takes the fat from the under eye fat pockets and repositions the fat evenly under the eye, and smoothens out the under eye area.

Under eye bag removal

For this type of case, the under eye bags are prominent, yet there is no visible sunken area under the eyes.

The fat deposits under the eye can be removed to make the under eye area smooth.

Lower blepharoplasty

This surgery is for anyone in their 40s or 50s. The under eye bags are very visible and there is considerable saggy in the under eye area.

An incision is made in the lower part of the eye, excess fat and skin are removed and the skin is lifted to make the under eye area smooth.

Pre-surgery Checklist – How to prepare for surgery in Korea?

This is one of the most asked questions, for patients who wish to have surgery in South Korea. Especially for people who are having surgery for the first time, it is easy to get anxious and not know what to do. We made a quick list for prospective patients to keep in mind when planning to have surgery in Korea.

1. Surgery Timeline
Patients book surgeries throughout the year, so make sure to check the weather and bring appropriate clothes. If it is winter, warm clothes are necessary, and if patient gets a cold, runny nose etc, surgery may get cancelled. Things to prepare include a hat, comfortable clothing, and comfortable walking shoes.

2. Medication
Patients who are on medication or having any medical issues have to inform the hospital and get approval, to make sure the medication will not affect surgery. If patients have any types of allergies that prevent surgery, egg allergies or antibiotic allergies, information should be provided in advance to avoid surgery cancellation after coming to Korea. Aspirin should be avoided 7-10 days before surgery as it can cause excessive bleeding during surgery, which is dangerous.

3. Nail polish/Gel nails and piercings
During surgery, a devise is used to read the oxygen level in your blood, and this device cannot read oxygen levels if you have nail polish or artificial nails so they must be removed before the surgery, especially gel or acrylic nails, which take a long time to remove. As for piercings, they have to be removed before the surgery. During the surgery procedure, a medical device is used to control bleeding and to prevent getting a surgical burn; all piercings and jewelry have to be removed before surgery. For piercings that cannot be removed even for a few hours, plan ahead to get spacers not made of any metal material, to replace them during surgery. Make-up should also not be worn during surgery.

4. Food
For patients not quite used to Korean cuisine, bringing along some liquid or dry food from your own country will help you for the first few days after surgery. After some surgeries, like orthographic surgery, facial contouring surgeries etc liquids or soft foods only can be consumed, so make sure to prepare some food in advance. If you have surgery at ID Hospital, there is a café on the lobby floor, and porridge and juices are available for sale.

5. Shopping
For the first week after surgery, shopping may not sound like much fun, but ID Hospital is located in Gangnam, with Garosugil, and Gangnam station close by, many patients like to spend their leisure time shopping. If you like shopping, make sure to pack lightly so you can take many of the amazing merchandise and Korean cosmetics with you for your family and friends.

6. Alcohol/smoking
Drinking alcohol may interfere with blood pressure and blood sugar levels-and to have the best surgery results patients have to stop drinking alcohol for one week before surgery and 1-3 months after surgery. It is the same thing with smoking, as it affects swelling and can increase chances of getting an infection.

Make sure to get all your questions answered when planning to come and have surgery and our online consultants are happy to help you with all inquiries.

Nano fat graft VS Fillers: Pros and Cons

Why are these surgeries required?

As someone gets older, volume/fat is lost, which can make someone appear older. Due to that reason, people opt to have volume added for a more youthful look. To help you compare between both procedures, we will explain the pros and cons for both to make it easier for you to select the right procedure for you.

What is Nano Fat graft?

Areas with excess fat tissue, such as thigh or abdomen, will have the fat extracted, isolated, and centrifuged.
The processed fat tissue is then administered to the area of interest via injection. Since the fat tissue comes from your own body, your body will not recognize the fat tissue as a foreign material.

Fat graft is recommended for patients who wish to use their own fat tissue to add volume to the face. Things to consider would be, not getting the fat graft in an area where the muscles require continuous usage, e.g around the mouth, as that will usually be re-absorbed by the body at a faster rate.

ID Hospital’s Nano fat graft uses fine size nano cannulas to inject the fat cells, which are smaller than the normal sized cannulas (0.4-0.8 mm in size). Fat cells are broken down into smaller nano fat cells, and evenly injected to multiple layers.

Pros:
1. Due to the fat coming from your own body, there is no chance of negative reaction and it looks more natural, especially for under the eye area.
2. After the fat graft, the remaining fat will be stored for 3 months, so if you have the second session, the results will last for a long time (semi-permanent)
3. For areas that require 3ccs to 5ccs or more, it is more cost effective to get fat graft compared to getting filler.

Cons:
1. If you cannot come back to have the second session, then it is better to just get a filler.
2. If you work-out a lot, or lose weight easily, then the fat re-absorption rate is usually higher, so the results will not last longer.
3. If you do not like the results, you have to wait till the fat gets re-absorbed into the body, or consider a liposuction or fat melting procedure.

What is filler?

Hyaluronic acid(HA) is a natural substance found densely in cartilage, in the fluid surrounding your eyes, as well as in skin tissue. If the proper amount is not maintained, the essential nutrients will not be supplied properly to skin cells. A loss of HA is the reason why our skin gets wrinkled and dehydrated as we age.

HA is able to hold up to 1000 times its molecular weight in water so sometimes it’s called “nature’s moisturizer”. As it penetrates deep into the dermis and fills it with moisture, it tightens the overall complexion and maintains skin elasticity and volume.

Restylane® and Juvéderm® are a leading filler brands, and a commonly used Korean filler brand in Korea is Yvoire®. All of these fillers are available for patients at ID Hospital.

Filler-Before and After

Pros:
1. If you work-out a lot, or lose weight easily, then the filler is more cost-effective, than fat  graft.
2. For increasing volume in areas like lips, getting filler is recommended.
3. If you cannot come back to have the second fat graft session, then it is better to just get a filler.
4. For patients who do not wish to undergo surgery, filler is a faster, preferable option.
5. If you do not like the results, you can get a filler melting injection, to dissolve the hyaluronic acid.

Cons:
1. A filler typically lasts from 6 months to a year and requires regular upkeep.
2. Especially in the lips, fillers last about 6 months because the lips move a lot.

Purpose of Online Consultation

ID Hospital offers online consultation through different channels like email, Whatsapp, line, kakaotalk, posting on the website etc., to assist the patient to get an idea about the type of surgeries they require with estimated price quotes.

Things patients have to keep in mind about online consultation:

1.     The online consultation offer surgery recommendations based on photos sent to the consultant, but the doctor’s recommendation may differ at the actual consultation appointment. If the recommendation differs, the price also differs, so patients should keep that in mind when doing the online consultation.

2.     The price quotes given are the starting point (basic) but if the patient requires a more complicated surgery process, the surgery price will increase, so that is something to keep in mind, especially if the patient has had an accident and is having a reconstructive surgery.

3.     Revision surgery: online consultation for revision surgeries is very limited, due to the patient already having surgery performed on that area, through pictures or X-ray, surgery possibility cannot be confirmed. A face to face consultation is required.

4.     The recovery time for various surgeries differ, so if you decide to have different surgeries from the ones initially recommended, make sure to let the online consultant know. For example, forehead implant surgery requires 1 week for the implant to be customized, so surgery is done one week after consultation, so the patient has to stay for 2 weeks in Korea, but if doing other surgeries like V-line surgery, then the total duration of stay will increase to 3 weeks.

5.     Potential patients have to make sure to disclose their medical history details and allergies before making a surgery booking. If a patient leaves out important information during the online consultation, and during the pre-examinations, the hospital finds out they have a medical condition that prevents them from having surgery, surgery will be cancelled and deposit will not be refunded. So please always mention all details related to medical history and allergies.

Do feel free to contact us on any of our contact details below for a free online consultation~~

[ID Hospital News Article] Middle-aged entrepreneurs and specialists enhance their business capability by transforming their looks (face lifting, thread lifting, wrinkle treatment, non-surgical anti-aging)

ID Hospital Asian Beauty Center, analyzed patients who had wrinkle removal procedure and conducted a 1:1 survey with them

While the recession has been a big issue in today’s society, there’s changing wave in anti-aging among middle-aged people who work actively in society. Professionals with higher education and high income, female CEO, the executives of companies and etc have undergone ‘business plastic surgery’, such as wrinkle removal or anti-aging to enhance their competitiveness by younger appearance. In fact, this wave is seen clearly through a survey that one hospital conducted of patients who got wrinkle removal.

ID Hospital Asian Beauty Center (Sang Hoon Park, head doctor/plastic surgery specialist) conducted a survey of 200 patients who had wrinkle removal procedures, such as face lifting and non-incision SMAS lifting (thread lifting) starting from January to December in 2015. As a result, 42% (84 patients) of total respondents are professionals and CEOs, do their own businesses and etc. This result tells that the main motivation to get wrinkle removal procedure is to improve appearance for doing a good business and it has been a trend among middle-aged people.

Also, 74.5% (149 people) of this group get high income; their income is higher than the average income of 3-persons family which is 4,816,665 KRW and 24.5% (49 people) of total respondents earn over 10,000,000 KRW per a family. People in this group prefer thread lifting which is conducted with non-incision method and makes natural result without leaving any surgical trace than incision method which affects daily life.

In the group, 27.5% (55 people) had SMAS lifting whereas 14.5% (29 people) had face lifting. As their incomes are higher, it’s seen clear that people with high income prefer the thread lifting (non-incision SMAS lifting). 34% (34 people) of total 100 patients who had thread lifting (SMAS lifting) earn over 10,000,000 KRW a month per family.

In accordance with this changing trend, non-surgical anti-aging treatment, such as non-incision wrinkle treatment, has been developed lately. This is a combination of face lifting and non-incision procedure so it removes wrinkles and brings your young look back. SMAS layer refers to fibromatosis which is located between hypodermic layer that is located in deeper area than where dermis and muscle layer are. According to the survey ID hospital conducted, 85% of respondents who had SMAS lifting chose thread lifting because it makes more natural look and 75% of them chose the thread lifting because the recovery period is short.

Dr. Sang Hoon Park (plastic surgery specialist) at ID hospital Asian Beauty Center said “middle-aged people with high income, visit to the plastic surgery hospital because they think having a plastic surgery to get younger look, such as removal of wrinkles, is the same as investing for themselves, such as purchasing brand-name products. They are interested in not only the simple procedures, such as botox or fillers but also SMAS face lifting (thread lifting) which doesn’t really affect the daily life and makes a good result.”
