FAQ about Orthognathic Surgery
So what is Orthognathic Surgery?
Orthognathic surgery is a corrective jaw surgery performed to correct problematic conditions of the jaw and face generally related to structure, growth, etc. The maxilla and mandible will be cut and re-aligned then attached and fixated by screws or pins.
In order to correct bimaxillary prognathism (protruding mouth) and long face, you need to undergo orthognathic surgery (double jaw surgery = two jaw surgery = corrective jaw surgery)
What's the difference between V Line Surgery and orthognathic surgery?
They are completely different procedures. Orthognathic surgery focuses on correcting functional issues due to misalignment of the upper and lower jaw but can also be performed for aesthetic desires.
V Line Surgery, however, is performed only along the mandible and chin area purely for aesthetic reasons.
It is common for both procedures to be undergone both at once for the most aesthetically appealing facial contour, but is not always recommended.
How long do I need to stay in Korea?
It is recommended that you stay in Korea for about 4-5 weeks following the surgery date.
First, you need to come to ID Hospital one week prior to the desired surgery surgery date so that we can manufacture your wafer mold impression (bite mold) which you will wear for a month from the surgery date to help with the realignment of your new bite.
Then for the next three weeks, you will continually come for post-op check-ups to ensure the safest and quickest recovery for you.
Can my long face be corrected by this surgery?
If you want to correct the lower 1/3 of your face, you can have orthognathic surgery (two-jaw surgery = double jaw surgery = corrective jaw surgery). You can visit the following link to see how a person looks different after having two-jaw surgery (http://ameblo.jp/jpidhospital/entry-11826157336.html).
Also, if you have two-jaw surgery, your protruding upper mouth (maxillary prognathism) can be pushed backward as well as your long philtrum can be shortened.
| | Isn’t it dangerous if the ties aren't connected between the jaws?
|
| | |
| | It’s not dangerous at all even without the tie between jaws. The no-tie and general two-jaw surgeries basically are almost the exact same surgery process so they are both safe. Instead, no-tie two-jaw surgery allows you to breathe comfortably so that it reduces the risk of respiratory failure and is much safer.
Moreover, we look at the jaw joint and alignment of teeth after the surgery to finally determine whether or not to tie between jaws. Therefore, the patients have more choices. ID Hospital considers safety of customers and operates only the safest surgery.

|
|
| | Is the surgery result the same even without the tie between jaws?
|
| | |
| | We plan and manage customers not to have recurrence or deformation after the surgery. Therefore, the result after surgery is the same. We recommend to take no-tie two-jaw only if there will be the same surgery result. Thus, functional result or aesthetic result of face is the same in terms of jaw joint or teeth. We added ID’s only super-precision core technology on top of existing surgery method, so you will be much more satisfied with the result.

|
|
| | Is no-tie two-jaw surgery operated only at ID Hospital?
|
| | |
| | As we know of, there’s no other hospital that applies our core technology. Of course it is possible to operate two-jaw surgery without the tie procedure. However, the problem is that if they have safe skills and measures to operate without the tie procedure. Do they have successful clinical experiences? These are important matters to take into consideration.

|
|
| | I’m worried if my teeth are not aligned after the surgery.
|
| | |
| | We use Torque-free Rigid Internal Fastenation which was first introduced by ID Hospital and super-precision jaw joint registration system to predict teeth movement accurately and fasten them. Hence, there’s no misalignment after the surgery.
|
|
|
| | Is no-tie two-jaw surgery available for all cases?
|
| | |
| | The patient's recovery process and safety should be considered. Thus, not everyone can undergo this surgery. About 80-90% of patients are capable of undergoing this surgery based on our clinical experienced so far. We can determine if you can undergo this surgery after a thorough examination with the doctor along with a X-Ray CT scan.
Will I need braces after two jaw surgery?
About 90% of cases require braces after surgery. Since the upper and lower jaws will be re-positioned and realigned, your natural bite will change as well. Therefore, orthodontics will be applied after the surgery to help move and re-calibrate your bite. On average, patients should expect an approximate year to two.
The patient can decide to either have the orthodontic treatment at our dental office or they can have them in their own country depending on their preference. Orthodontic treatment will generally take anywhere from 6 months to a year and a half.
If the patient decides to do them at ID Dentist, then they must come in regularly every 4 or so weeks for tightening and care.
I need to have revision surgery but I’m
worried about unnatural results.
If the patient wishes to undergo revision
surgery, we recommend waiting at least a minimum of 6 months. With each surgery
that is performed, more and more soft tissue becomes damaged in the region. If
the soft tissues become too damaged with the number of surgeries, then the area
may either become inoperable or look stiff. It is critical that the patient
chooses the doctor right the first time to reduce the risk of revision surgery.
If the patient must undergo revision, then
a revision specialist must be contacted instead since revision cases are far
more complex and intricate. Unlike other hospitals, we have doctors who are
experts in revision surgery each specialized in their own field. We will give you the best look that is natural and well-balanced
with the harmony of your face.
