Pre-surgery Checklist – How to prepare for surgery in Korea?

This is one of the most asked questions, for patients who wish to have surgery in South Korea. Especially for people who are having surgery for the first time, it is easy to get anxious and not know what to do. We made a quick list for prospective patients to keep in mind when planning to have surgery in Korea.

1. Surgery Timeline
Patients book surgeries throughout the year, so make sure to check the weather and bring appropriate clothes. If it is winter, warm clothes are necessary, and if patient gets a cold, runny nose etc, surgery may get cancelled. Things to prepare include a hat, comfortable clothing, and comfortable walking shoes.

2. Medication
Patients who are on medication or having any medical issues have to inform the hospital and get approval, to make sure the medication will not affect surgery. If patients have any types of allergies that prevent surgery, egg allergies or antibiotic allergies, information should be provided in advance to avoid surgery cancellation after coming to Korea. Aspirin should be avoided 7-10 days before surgery as it can cause excessive bleeding during surgery, which is dangerous.

3. Nail polish/Gel nails and piercings
During surgery, a devise is used to read the oxygen level in your blood, and this device cannot read oxygen levels if you have nail polish or artificial nails so they must be removed before the surgery, especially gel or acrylic nails, which take a long time to remove. As for piercings, they have to be removed before the surgery. During the surgery procedure, a medical device is used to control bleeding and to prevent getting a surgical burn; all piercings and jewelry have to be removed before surgery. For piercings that cannot be removed even for a few hours, plan ahead to get spacers not made of any metal material, to replace them during surgery. Make-up should also not be worn during surgery.

4. Food
For patients not quite used to Korean cuisine, bringing along some liquid or dry food from your own country will help you for the first few days after surgery. After some surgeries, like orthographic surgery, facial contouring surgeries etc liquids or soft foods only can be consumed, so make sure to prepare some food in advance. If you have surgery at ID Hospital, there is a café on the lobby floor, and porridge and juices are available for sale.

5. Shopping
For the first week after surgery, shopping may not sound like much fun, but ID Hospital is located in Gangnam, with Garosugil, and Gangnam station close by, many patients like to spend their leisure time shopping. If you like shopping, make sure to pack lightly so you can take many of the amazing merchandise and Korean cosmetics with you for your family and friends.

6. Alcohol/smoking
Drinking alcohol may interfere with blood pressure and blood sugar levels-and to have the best surgery results patients have to stop drinking alcohol for one week before surgery and 1-3 months after surgery. It is the same thing with smoking, as it affects swelling and can increase chances of getting an infection.

Make sure to get all your questions answered when planning to come and have surgery and our online consultants are happy to help you with all inquiries.

Nano fat graft VS Fillers: Pros and Cons

Why are these surgeries required?

As someone gets older, volume/fat is lost, which can make someone appear older. Due to that reason, people opt to have volume added for a more youthful look. To help you compare between both procedures, we will explain the pros and cons for both to make it easier for you to select the right procedure for you.

What is Nano Fat graft?

Areas with excess fat tissue, such as thigh or abdomen, will have the fat extracted, isolated, and centrifuged.
The processed fat tissue is then administered to the area of interest via injection. Since the fat tissue comes from your own body, your body will not recognize the fat tissue as a foreign material.

Fat graft is recommended for patients who wish to use their own fat tissue to add volume to the face. Things to consider would be, not getting the fat graft in an area where the muscles require continuous usage, e.g around the mouth, as that will usually be re-absorbed by the body at a faster rate.

ID Hospital’s Nano fat graft uses fine size nano cannulas to inject the fat cells, which are smaller than the normal sized cannulas (0.4-0.8 mm in size). Fat cells are broken down into smaller nano fat cells, and evenly injected to multiple layers.

Pros:
1. Due to the fat coming from your own body, there is no chance of negative reaction and it looks more natural, especially for under the eye area.
2. After the fat graft, the remaining fat will be stored for 3 months, so if you have the second session, the results will last for a long time (semi-permanent)
3. For areas that require 3ccs to 5ccs or more, it is more cost effective to get fat graft compared to getting filler.

Cons:
1. If you cannot come back to have the second session, then it is better to just get a filler.
2. If you work-out a lot, or lose weight easily, then the fat re-absorption rate is usually higher, so the results will not last longer.
3. If you do not like the results, you have to wait till the fat gets re-absorbed into the body, or consider a liposuction or fat melting procedure.

What is filler?

Hyaluronic acid(HA) is a natural substance found densely in cartilage, in the fluid surrounding your eyes, as well as in skin tissue. If the proper amount is not maintained, the essential nutrients will not be supplied properly to skin cells. A loss of HA is the reason why our skin gets wrinkled and dehydrated as we age.

HA is able to hold up to 1000 times its molecular weight in water so sometimes it’s called “nature’s moisturizer”. As it penetrates deep into the dermis and fills it with moisture, it tightens the overall complexion and maintains skin elasticity and volume.

Restylane® and Juvéderm® are a leading filler brands, and a commonly used Korean filler brand in Korea is Yvoire®. All of these fillers are available for patients at ID Hospital.

Filler-Before and After

Pros:
1. If you work-out a lot, or lose weight easily, then the filler is more cost-effective, than fat  graft.
2. For increasing volume in areas like lips, getting filler is recommended.
3. If you cannot come back to have the second fat graft session, then it is better to just get a filler.
4. For patients who do not wish to undergo surgery, filler is a faster, preferable option.
5. If you do not like the results, you can get a filler melting injection, to dissolve the hyaluronic acid.

Cons:
1. A filler typically lasts from 6 months to a year and requires regular upkeep.
2. Especially in the lips, fillers last about 6 months because the lips move a lot.

Curious about the difference between double jaw surgery and facial contouring surgery?

That is one of the most frequently asked questions, so here is detailed explanation!

Orthognathic surgery

Orthognathic surgery

Orthognathic surgery, also known as double jaw surgery surgically corrects the upper and lower jaws and adjusts them in the correct position. The procedure is suitable for conditions including mandibular prognathism, mouth protrusion, facial asymmetry, and other abnormal positioning of the jaw.

Traditionally, braces were required to be worn 1 to 1.5 years prior to surgery. The double Jaw surgery method originating from ID Hospital, Surgery-First Approach Orthognathic surgery is an innovative procedure that has shortened the whole surgery time by eliminating the braces prior to surgery. After the surgery, a wafer is worn for one month followed by braces. Usually, depending on the cases, braces are required after the surgery to re-align the bite.

Orthognathic surgery Before and After

There are many types of orthognathic surgery, so the right type of surgery is determined during consultation, after X-ray and 3D CT scans, to make a customized surgical plan.

Facial contouring surgery (V-line surgery)

Facial Contouring surgery (V-line surgery)

V-line surgery, also known as jaw reduction surgery, actually includes two types of surgeries. Jaw reduction is done to reduce the size of the jaw bone (mandible angle) and a chin genioplasty surgery is done to reduce or extend the chin bone.

Just like the orthognathic surgery, there are different types of methods for the V-line surgery, and osteotomy methods differ. Dia-osteotomy, T-osteotomy, etc. are recommended by the surgeon upon reviewing a patient’s X-rays. The golden ratio is used to determine the ideal proportion for a patient’s face.

Important things to keep in mind before going for any types of facial bone surgeries:

1. Experience level of the surgeon is important, so selection of the surgeon is vital and can make all the difference in the type of results you get.
2. The safety level of the facilities you select to have your surgery at.
4. Managing the surgery results, by following all the instructions given, and exercising the jaw to help it heal faster

ID Hospital specializes in facial bone surgeries, with board-certified, highly experienced surgeons and is certified by the Korean Health and Welfare Ministry.

New lease on life: orthognathic and facial contouring surgery review

Nationality: Korean
Desired Surgery : Eyes, nose
Surgery performed: Orthognathic surgery, V-line facial contouring surgery

Before Surgery

I was born with severe facial asymmetry and had an under bite, so I grew up feeling very self-conscious about my looks. I was very glad when I found ID Hospital, and resolved to finally change my looks for the better. I had functional and aesthetic concerns, which were well addressed by my surgeon and I was recommended both the orthognathic surgery also known as the double jaw surgery, and facial contouring surgery known as V-line surgery.

3 weeks post-surgery

Just after the surgery, I had a lot of bruising and swelling, so I had to do a lot of things to help reduce the swelling faster. I had pumpkin juice and walked a lot. I could only have liquids for some days after surgery, so I had a lot of warm soups and smoothies. I thought the swelling would stay for long, at least 3 months, but I am very happy with my 3 weeks post-surgery progress.

5 months post-surgery

From 3 months after surgery onward, my looks changed completely. From then on, daily, my face gets smaller and smaller as the minor swelling reduces. I did not imagine that the Orthognathic surgery and the facial contouring surgery would change me this way. I am still amazed every time I see my reflection in the mirror.

9 months post-surgery

My confidence level has increased so much!  I keep getting compliments all the time, so that motivated me to join the gym and get working on my body! I feel great and look forward to life with a great outlook. ID Hospital is really the best when it comes to orthognathic and facial contouring surgeries

Thank you, ID Hospital, for giving me a new life!~
