[ID Hospital Blog] How Korea Celebrates Seol Nal (Lunar New Year)

How Korea Celebrates Seol Nal (Lunar New Year)

Starting tomorrow (Wednesday, February 18), Koreans will start the celebration of Lunar New Year or Seol Nal (설날). Along with the harvest holiday Chuseok, Seol Nal is one of the most important holidays in Korea.

The holiday is very family orientated with people traveling back to their hometowns to spend time with family and friends. If you ever visit Seoul during this holiday, it is very strange sight indeed to see the normally bustling streets so empty!

So what do Koreans do at family gatherings? While people used to wear the colorful Korean traditional costume hanbok (한복), nowadays many people forgo that custom and just wear regular everyday clothes. Children will wish their elders a fruitful, healthy and happy new year by performing a deep bow called jeol (절). Elders will at times gift children with New Year’s money similar to the Chinese New Year tradition. The entire family will then eat ddukguk (떡국), a soup with sliced rice cakes. It doesn’t feel like New Year if you don’t eat ddukguk!

The rest of the day may be filled with playing traditional games such as yut nori (윳놀이), though in present day families may forgo the games just to sit and talk and spend valuable time with each other.

For many Koreans, Seol Nal is a welcome chance to get away from the bustling chaos of everyday life and enjoy the undisturbed company of loved ones. To start the New Year with cherished family and friends, refreshed and recharged!

If you are currently living in Korea or have any Korean friends or family, now is the perfect time to greet them with “say hae-bok mah nee bah deu sae yo” (새해복 많이 받으세요, which means ‘please receive many blessings in the New Year’). We at ID Hospital also wish all of our valued patients and friends a prosperous, blessed and happy New Year!
