Preparing for surgery checklist: what not to do!
Many foreign patients prepare for their plastic surgery journey a long time before the actual surgery date. They need to reserve the spot for a procedure, travel all way from another country and get days off work. However, there are cases when in the end the surgery is cancelled. It is very important to follow pre surgery rules in order to avoid canceling the surgery. Here are 3 cases when the surgery will be cancelled or postponed!
Fasting time
Fasting before the surgery is essential when preparing for surgery. Patient is supposed to start fasting 8 hours prior the surgery under general anesthesia or 6 hours prior to the sleep sedation.
Why is fasting so important? Anesthesia can decrease your body’s ability to prevent foods from entering the lungs. So in case you haven’t fasted properly, there is a risk of vomiting and as a result the food will get into your lungs, causing choking.
Not only food, but also water or any other drinks are also strictly prohibited. So if you consume anything during the required fasting hours, the surgery will be cancelled for your own safety.
Medication intake
In ID Hospital our consultants always inform the patients about the medications they should avoid. For example, aspirin causes excessive bleeding. Medication for diabetes is allowed until the day before the surgery, but not during the fasting time. Some patients forget to follow these instructions and get their surgery cancelled. Make sure to inform our consultants about the medications you take to ensure the safety.
No manicure / pedicure
You might be surprised, but the manicure and pedicure are not allowed before the surgery.
The reason is quite simple. The surgeon needs your nails to be clean in order to monitor the oxygen saturation during the procedure. So we require all of our patients to remove the nail gel in advance when preparing for surgery.
All of these precautions might seem not significant, but they are very important. ID Hospital consultants and surgeons require our visitors to follow these rules in order to make to surgery process hassle-free and safe. If you still have questions left feel free to ask our online consultants for more details.
