What do I eat after orthognathic (two jaw) surgery?

Many people in Korea are looking for stamina health food as it’s freezing cold recently.

People say that eating well will keep people healthy but this doesn’t apply on orthognathic surgery review because it’s hard for orthognathic surgery patients to eat as usual, at first place.

Roughly, orthognathic surgery is a surgery that improves malocclusion, excessively long jaw and asymmetric jaw. There are many orthognathic surgery patients complaining due to starvation from the lack of eating as the surgery is done on both lower and upper jaw.

Patients are usually hospitalized about 2 to 3 days after orthognathic surgery and they can’t eat right after surgery.

The patients are required to eat according to the medical staff’s direction as it still takes time for the body to regain its normal function after the patients are awake after surgery.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Basically, the patients must fast for 8 hours before general anesthesia. During fast, the patients should not eat solid food such as candy and gum, and even liquid foods like coffee, milk and water. It’s to prevent the foods in stomach from going into airway and cause suffocation or pneumonia during anesthesia or surgery, as the patients may vomit during anesthesia or surgery. Thus if the patient’s surgery is scheduled in morning, the patients can start fasting from 12 on the night before.

Especially for orthognathic surgery, eating what the patients want helps to reduce the stress coming after surgery as there’s limitation of food consumption during the recovery period after surgery.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After this process, the patients can have liquid diet such as soymilk and water that can be drunken by straw. The patients should avoid such things like fat soup as they cannot brush their teeth.

Liquid diet can include porridge, milk, juice and water, and these are the food that the patients can consume for two weeks after orthognathic surgery.

ID Hospital provides pumpkin juice which helps reducing swell after surgery, thus this can be a good diet for orthognathic surgery patients during this period.
After this, the patients can start having a meal that doesn’t have to be chewed, and there will be more foods available as the patients can open their mouth enough for them to brush their teeth. However it’s good to avoid salty foods before swelling goes down.

It’s not good to eat this and that even the patients can open their mouth due to fast recovery, and do not forget to consult medical staff about patient’s dietary requirement for safety.
