Q. Does ID Hospital perform preoperative medical checkup as compulsory before orthognathic surgery?

I think I will need Two jaw surgery because I have severely protruded jaw and I’m really scared as it is an orthognathic surgery.

I heard that ID operates preoperative checkup that has 50 items, do I deserve that as well or do I deserve that as partial?

As I’m worried before surgery… please tell me about the preoperative medical checkup in detail~

A. Yes! All patients go through preoperative medical checkup according to their anesthesia requirement, and for orthognathic patients who undergo general anesthesia conducts full preoperative medical checkup which consists of about 50 items performed by professional examination team led by internists.

Preoperative medical checkup is a compulsory at ID as the checkup considers patient’s availability for surgery before surgery, possible risk factors during surgery and fast recovery after surgery.

For patients who are concerned about protruded jaw, 3D-CT and V-CEPH examination have to be performed to determine if the patients are Two jaw surgery candidates or not, but we will assume that the questioner is Two jaw surgery candidates and continue on the answer.

Bone’s aging is progressed according to the stage of lifecycle, and the aging status, bone density, and the thickness and length of bone are identified to be used to plan surgery.

Also for students who are still in their growth period must undergo growth plate examination, and the surgery can be performed after the growth has stopped.

Usually the growth stop at about 18~20 years, but it’s safe to get preoperative medical checkup prior to surgery as males can grow up 25 years and females can grow up 23 according to individual’s characteristics.

ID’s patient can receive professional and systematic medical checkup without any discomfort of visiting multiple hospital as the medical checkup is operated in ID Hospital by ID Hospital.

There’s no additional fee required for the medical checkup if the patients get surgery at our hospital and it takes about a week to get the result.

Patients can be relaxed as consultation with specialized doctors about undergoing surgery or not if there is anything wrong with the patients’ result.

We would also inform about few simplified caution before preoperative medical checkup.

The patients must avoid alcohol a day before checkup and have to be careful on overwork or overeating as this can affect on the checkup result.

The patients have to stop taking medicine about 2~3 days before medical checkup if they were taking medicine and the patients with high blood pressure or diabetes will discuss this with their doctors.

Q. Is it possible to get No-Tie Two jaw surgery with undetectable pin?

I have asymmetric face and malocclusion.

I want to get undetectable Two jaw surgery, but is it possible to do this as No-tie two jaw surgery?

And I was also wondering if I had to get orthodontic treatment before and after surgery if I get undetectable Two jaw surgery or only get orthodontic treatment after surgery like surgery first approach method.

Also how long is the recovery period?

A. Basically, Yes! Undetectable Two jaw surgery can be done on both surgery first approach and No-Tie method.

It’s possible for the patients to arrange the surgery date after conducting all medical checkups required for surgery on the consultation day.

Usually the surgery date is arranged about 2 weeks after the consultation day, but it’s also possible arrange a surgery before then according to the patients’ personal reason.

Also the patients will be hospitalized for about 2~3 days and will have to visit hospital 2~3 times during a month.

The patients will start on orthodontic treatment a month after their surgery, and they will be required to visit dental clinic once a month.

The recovery periods differ on person, but there won’t be major discomfort during daily routine about 1~2 weeks after the patient is dismissed from hospital.

The major swelling on the surgery area will subdue about a month after surgery, and minor swelling will subdue during 3~6 months after surgery. Facial muscle movement will recover during this period and the patient will regain natural looking.

Q. I have mouth protrusion and short chin. Do I require Three jaw surgery?

I was thinking of mouth protrusion surgery or orthodontic treatment because of my protrusion but my friend told me that I may need Three jaw surgery because I have short chin.

I’ve never heard the word short chin till then… but she told me that my mouth looks even more protruded because of short chin.

I told my mom and she just told me to get orthodontic treatment but I wouldn’t have thought about Two jaw surgery if this can be improved by orthodontic treatment.

I want to know what surgery will be the most effective in my case if I have to get surgery, or I also want to know about short chin surgery if my mouth protrusion can be improved by orthodontic treatment.

A. Three jaw surgery can satisfy both cosmetic and functional effect if the patient has short chin symptoms with mouth protrusion.

Three jaw surgery for mouth protrusion is combination of Two jaw surgery and mouth protrusion surgery which improves on mouth protrusion and short chin at the same time by pushing gum bone and teeth backward to correct mouth protrusion and bringing chin forward to correct short chin. The surgery duration is about 2 hours and the patients are required to be hospitalized for a day.

Mouth protrusion can be improved by orthodontic treatment when only the patient’s teeth are protruded. Short chin symptom can be improved by mini V line surgery if the patient only has short and dull chin. However please note that we can give you detailed recommendation after detailed X-ray analysis.
