[ID hospital] What is nose revision?

What is nose revision?

Nose revision refers to a case in which a patient already underwent rhinoplasty, but could not obtain a satisfactory result aesthetically and/or functionally.

Most times, the patients consider nose revision when the shape is different from what was expected, when the implant is severely moving or when a side effect such as infection occurs. Nose revision requires a higher level of technique compared to the first surgery, thus it is important to choose a hospital with a structural surgical system such as collaboration between an ENT and plastic surgeon, who has much experiences and advanced technique regarding nose surgery.

Cases that require nose revision

-  A crooked nose implant

In this case, after an implant is removed, symmetrical shaped spaces for the new implant has to be created. Then the implant, which has been designed considering the shape of the nasal dorsum, will be inserted. The implant will not be crooked if it’s fixed on mid-section of the cartilage.

- Too high nasal bridge

In this case, the silicone implant will first be removed, followed by the hump and the bridge will be lowered by inserting a thinner implant, in consideration of the patient’s desires. If the nasal dorsum becomes more narrow via osteotomy in order to correct broad nasal bone, the nose will look more defined even if the height of the bridge becomes lower.

- Lowered nose tip

In this case, we create the nose tip by using a nasal septum cartilage in order to make the nose tip cartilage stronger. Then we graft cartilage above that to ensure the nose tip does not become lower.

- Narrow nasal bridge

In this case, replacing an implant to a broader shaped one can correct the issue.

- Nose tip deformation

In this case, severe scar tissue will be removed at first. Then the nose tip will be reconstructed by using a nasal septum or ear cartilage in order to recreate the nose tip.

- Shortened nose due to a capsular contracture

In this case, removal of the silicone implant is required and the patient has to wait 3 to 6 months from the first surgery, until the surrounding skin tissues become soft.
Shortened nose tip can be corrected by lengthening the nose tip, using nasal septum from inside the nose. Nose bridge can be made higher by using an implant.

Ideal nose revision timeframe

1. Normally 6 months from the first surgery is required, when the general skin tissue becomes soft.

2. For the case of simple bridge augmentation, nose revision 3 months post surgery is possible.

3. An implant has to first be removed for the case of an infection. When an infection completely disappears, revision nose surgery can be performed.

Special features of a nose revision

-  Acknowledge the cause of the first surgery’s failure

Understand and analyze the cause of the first surgery’s failure through sufficient consultation with a plastic surgeon and ENT surgeon, to have more successful nose revision surgery.

-  Anticipate the result through 3D virtual simulation

Anticipate the result of the revision surgery through 3D virtual simulation which shows you the almost realistic result.

- Surgical plan for each individual’s nose

We provide a surgical plan based on each individual’s facial features, in order to create a harmonious nose.

- Collaboration between a plastic surgeon and ENT surgeon

A surgical plan is built for functional treatment, after the ENT surgeon accurately diagnoses the condition of the nasal bone, cartilage inside the nose, and surrounding skin tissues. Then the plastic surgeon and ENT surgeon designs a beautiful nose that is balanced with a patient’s face, in order to create a beautiful and healthy nose.

- Minimized desquamation

The skin tissues may already be damaged from the first surgery. Therefore, we preserve the skin tissues by minimizing desquamation when performing a nose revision.
