Lunar New Year’s Day is coming!

Lunar New Year’s Day, which is called Seol-nal in Korean, is one of the biggest holidays of the year in Korea. It is sometimes known as 'Chinese New Year's day', and it is on the first day of a year according to the lunar calendar

In Korea, Lunar New Year’s Day is traditionally the day that family and relatives gather around.
Some people may be dressed in Han-bok (Korean traditional clothes)

When families gather together, we sometimes play traditional Korean games.

One of them is called Yut-nori which is a game of yut(4 wooden sticks).

How to play the game of yut

-Players are spitted into different teams (usually up to 4 teams) and each team takes turn to cast the yut one member of team at a time.

-According to the score chart, each team’s marker can move. If a player scores yut or mo, they can cast the yut again.

-If a marker lands on a station that other team’s marker is on, the marker that was on the station earlier is removed and placed on the starting position. In this case, the team who claimed the station can cast the yut again.

-The markers travel around the board forward only and the marker that travels back to the starting position, following team scores a point.

-The first team to score points with all markers wins the game.

It’s really easy to put on weight on Lunar New Year’s Day because the traditional foods that people eat on this day are very delicious.

Most popular New Year’s dishes are:

-Jeon (Korean traditional pancake)

-Ddeok-Guk (Korean traditional rice cake soup)

-Mandu (Korean style dumplings)

Happy Lunar New Year~
