Seoul Sights: Shopping & Eating Mecca Garosugil

For patients choosing to have surgery at ID Hospital, did you know that we are conveniently by one of the hottest shopping mecca’s in all of Seoul?! Less than a five minute walk from our hospital is Garosugil, a pretty tree-lined street filled with shops, cafes and restaurants. Garosugil (which literally mean tree-lined street) started as a place where emerging jewelry and clothing designers opened their first shops. The area has grown increasingly and steadily attracts not only local Seoulites but also visiting tourists from all over the world.

One day is not enough to explore all the delicious restaurants and shops that Garosugil has to offer but we have conveniently selected a few of our favorite places to share with you!

Cafes:

Softree, a small soft-serve ice-cream shop that boasts wait time of over an hour during the summer time, is famous for their honey-chip soft-serve ice-cream. Though Softree now has stores all over the city, Garosugil’s store is the original first.

Must try: honey-chip soft serve, mango soft serve

For those who like healthy food without sacrificing taste, Boto Acai’s fresh fruit bowls brimming with seasonal fruit, granola and the powerful amazon acai berry, which is popular for being low in sugar but high in iron, calcium and fiber as well as flavanoids that protect the body against free radicals. Boto Acai started as a tiny storefront but has now grown to take over the entire first floor of the building it occupies.

Must try: acai bowl

Restaurants:

Café Able is a beloved brunch restaurant with inviting rustic decor that specializes in fresh fruit juices and entrees that taste as good as they look. If you want to go to Able, go early because I guarantee there will be a wait during peak hours.

Must try: omelet frittata, gorgonzola shrimp, steak cream pasta

Mokpo Jip is a Korean restaurant famous for their simmered chicken stew with potatoes (don’t forget to make fried rice with the remaining stew once you’ve eaten a majority of the dish)! So popular the restaurant now has two locations within a block from each other. My stomach is rumbling just thinking about it.

Sam Sam Ee Nae is a pork belly restaurant that is one of the institutions of Garosugil (everyone knows it, everyone loves it). The restaurant offers low priced pork belly that is grilled alongside fresh leeks, kimchi and bean sprouts (unlimited amount for vegetables but be sure not to take more than you can eat). The vegetables take away the heaviness from the pork and the combination is de-light-ful. I recommend Sam Sam Ee Nae to all friends that come to visit Seoul and haven’t had one disappointed visitor!

Must try: fresh pork belly (first one on the menu)

Shopping & People Watching:

Even if you go to Garosugil with no plan in mind, take a seat at one of the many coffee shops like Coffee Smith, which has great outdoor seating during the summertime, and people watch. It is not uncommon to see street style photographers perched at street corners and models shooting magazine spreads and fashion mall lookbooks. Internationally renowned style bloggers such as Aimee Song can also be seen uploading their recent photos onto Instagram. Many TV shows also choose to shoot style-themed episodes on Garosugil so if you hear ecstatic shrieks and screams, it is most likely a popular idol boy band member (or if you’re lucky, members) like EXO, shown below.

Chain stores like 8 Seconds, Forever 21, Zara. Theory, and Mango as well as a ton of Korean makeup stores like Banila B, Clio, and Face Shop have locations here. Small boutiques that sell anything from tailor-made suits to handmade leather goods and accessories also have locations here. New and established designers also choose to make Garosugil their home base, from Steve J & Yoni P to Taeyong Ko.

Stores to visit: KM Play, SJYP, www.bagazimuri.com, Parsons, Frica, Koon With A View, A Land, 8 Seconds, SPR, Paul Han, Beyond Closet
